The establishment of President's Day was originally to commemorate the birthday of George Washington, the founding father of the United States. Because the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, was born on February 12, many people suggested that since Lincoln was also born in February, let’s call it “President's Day" instead of "Washington’s Birthday" to celebrate both presidents' birthdays in February.
