Installation of Ceramic Bathroom Sinks: Under-mount or Top-mount?

2022-07-11 16:42:49

You are determined to choose a ceramic sink for your bathroom. Now it’s necessary to think about how to install it.

In addition to ceramic vessel sinks, which are positioned right on the countertops, ceramic sinks can be generally installed in the ways of under-mount and top-mount. The two different installations are slightly distinct from each other and thus may have a different influence on your bathroom life accordingly. Therefore, let’s get to learn more about the two installations.

What do under-mount installation and top-mount installation mean?
Under-mount installation
Under-mount installation, or under-counter installation, is to mount the whole sink beneath the countertop. As a result, there is no lip between the sink and the countertop. Sinks installed in this way are called under-mount sinks.

Top-mount installation
As the counterpart to under-mount installation, top-mount installation is also called drop-in installation, over-mount installation, or self-rimming installation, etc. It’s to put the sink’s bowl under the countertop and leave the rim of the sink on the countertop to support the weight of the sink to some extent. Sinks that can be installed in this way are top-mount sinks.

How are under-mount installation and top-mount installation conducted?
The process of the two installations is roughly:
Under-mount installation:
1. Measure and cut the hole needed for the sink.
2. Choose a reveal style from positive reveal, zero reveal and negative reveal.
3. Place the sink in the precut hole, and tighten and seal it by applying epoxy paste to the underside of the counter and spreading the silicone caulk around the countertop.
4. Install the plumbing system.
5. Test for tightness.

Top-mount installation:
1. Measure and cut the hole needed for the sink.
2. Clean the countertop and put the sink into the precut hole.
3. Tighten the sink to the underside of the countertop and seal the rim.
4. Install the plumbing system.
5. Test for tightness.

What are the upsides and downsides of these two installations

Under-mount installation: save counter space & easier counter-top cleaning
Unlike top-mount installation, under-mount installation saves the space of the sink’s rim so that the countertop extends more or less.

Besides, ceramic sinks installed in this way make the counter-top more sanitary and easier to clean. You just need to wipe them down into the sink if the water and residues are left on the countertop.

Top-mount installation: simple installation & stronger support
On one hand, top-mount installation is simpler than under-mount installation, which is obvious from the installation process above. On the other hand, this way of installation offers relatively stronger support to the basin thanks to the rim left on the countertop.
